Söderlund Hägg, who serves on the municipal council in Ystad, Sweden, posted a comment in response to a social media post discussing the man who tried to assassinate Trump.

She later defended the comment, saying it should not be interpreted as wishing for anyone’s death.

–I don’t wish him dead, she said when asked about the statement.

The background is a Facebook post about the sentencing of Ryan Routh, the man who in 2024 planned to shoot Donald Trump at a golf course in Florida. He was stopped before carrying out the attack and has since been sentenced to life in prison.

The Swedish politician wrote a comment on the post.

– He would have saved many lives if he had succeeded, her comment reads.

Riks contacted Söderlund Hägg, who elaborates on her reasoning and links it to Trump’s policies. She claims that Trump causes people to die via ICE and says that Trump has had his bombs on Venezuela’s boats.

Asked to clarify her reasoning further, she declined in detail but stood by her statement, arguing that if a person is not in a position to influence or incite violence, there would be fewer deaths overall.

A few minutes later, she sent a longer message to clarify her position:

– I definitely don’t wish death on anyone. Not even Trump. But if the gunman had succeeded, there likely would have been less violence,” she wrote, describing her original comment as an observation rather than a wish.
